Bucket Fillers Email

Dear Bucket Fillers,
We are sending this special letter as we join you in mourning the loss of life from Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Connecticut. We find it difficult to adequately express our deep sorrow for those who were personally affected by this tragedy. Our bucketfilling work has taken us into many schools and to think that something like this could take place in any one of them is difficult to comprehend.
Bucket fillers instinctively want to help others; they want to provide light in the darkness. In addition to feeling such deep sadness and offering up prayers, I reflect and wonder: Is there anything else we, as bucket fillers, can do? Two things come to mind:
1) We can remember that a bucket represents a person's mental, emotional, and social health. People with empty buckets are likely to feel extremely sad or extremely angry. If it is possible to help fill these empty buckets, that could help relieve a great deal of the pain and lessen the likelihood of a tragedy. Not everyone with an empty bucket will hurt other people or themselves. However, some people whose buckets are empty, regardless of the reasons, may reach the point there they physically harm themselves or others.
2) Whenever we have feelings of sorrow for another, we can communicate our sorrow. Shared tears and empathetic expressions of sympathy and support help people through grief and loss. That's what bucket fillers do. We attend funerals. We send cards, letters, and flowers. We hold memorials. We somehow find a way to let others know that we care.
For those of you who would like to communicate your compassionate thoughts and feelings and/or support to the families of Sandy Hook School, we provide the following addresses:
Sandy Hook School PTSA
12 Dickinson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482
Sandy Hook School Support Fund
c/o Newton Savings Bank
39 Main Street
Newtown, CT 06470
United Way of Western Connecticut
We join with you and others around the world in continuing to send our loving thoughts and prayers to Newtown, Connecticut.

Sincerely,

Carol McCloud and the Bucket Fillers Team

Holiday Cards for Heros

Visit our YouTube channel to see Red Cross volunteers distributing cards and messages in previous years: Holiday Mail for Heroes YouTube playlist.

Each year we collect cards between October and early December and then distribute them at military installations, veterans hospitals, and in other locations.

Throughout the year, you can make a difference with a monetary gift to Help Military Families through the Red Cross. Your donation can help change a military family’s life. Donate Now.

There are several ways to be part of the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. In addition to sending cards on your own, you may want to start making plans to host card signing parties or card making parties. Here are a few guidelines to help you on your way:

Card Guidelines:

Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and then reviewed by Red Cross volunteers working around the country.
Please observe the following guidelines to ensure a quick reviewing process:

  • Ensure that all cards are signed.
  • Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member.” Cards addressed to specific individuals can not be delivered through this program.
  • Only cards are being accepted. Do not send or include letters.
  • Do not include email or home addresses on the cards: the program is not meant to foster pen pal relationships.
  • Do not include inserts of any kind, including photos: these items will be removed during the reviewing process.
  • Please refrain from choosing cards with glitter or using loose glitter as it can aggravate health issues of ill and injured warriors.
  • If you are mailing a large quantity of cards, please bundle them and place them in large mailing envelopes or flat rate postal shipping boxes. Each card does not need its own envelope, as envelopes will be removed from all cards before distribution.
All holiday greetings should be addressed and sent to:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

The deadline for having cards to the P.O. Box is Friday, December 7th.
Holiday cards received after this date cannot be guaranteed delivery.

Last night on the home front........

Well, I thought last night was going to be the worst night ever after discovering that Alex let the dogs out with the gates open when I came home. Ebony & Zorro had been missing for an hour before I noticed then of course all hell broke loose! I was able to find Ebony already heading home, but it took 2 hours of walking 3 miles to find my precious boy Zorro. THANK GOD! I was just sick about it until we found him. Needless to say, I totaly forgot about carving our pumpkins on Devil's night like we've done in the years past.
